Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons

Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons was the first European settlement in what is now Ontario, founded in 1639 by French Jesuit missionaries. It served as a mission headquarters for about 60 Jesuits and lay workers who lived among thousands of Wendat (Huron) people. The site was abandoned and burned by its own inhabitants in 1649 to prevent it from being captured during Iroquois attacks. Archaeological reconstruction in the 20th century recreated the mission as a living history museum, showing daily life in the 1600s. Today, visitors can explore its wooden fort, chapel, and longhouses, experiencing one of Canada’s most significant early cultural encounters.
